The Drama Committee and the Alliance for New Music-Theatre, an Arts Club Partner Organization, invite Club members and guests to descend with us into the bunker-like setting of Dupont Underground to witness the last surviving member of a Ukrainian military band sheltering from Russian bombardment below the steelworks of Mariupol in 2022.

Inna Goncharova’s play presents a vivid depiction of the terrible essence of war, while the Dupont Underground provides an eerie parallel for the trumpeter's subterranean bunker and survival against all odds.

The fully-staged experience is the latest event in the Alliance for New Music-Theatre's ongoing commitment to the writings of Ukrainian playwrights, bringing the far-away suffering of the Ukrainians up close during the fourth year of the Russian invasion.

Arts Club Member Susan Galbraith will lead an audience discussion following the production: "The role of the artist in precarious times."

A Members Reception & Program Presented by The Cultural Committee of The Arts Club of Washington:

    An Evening of Caribbean Music

    featuring

    KOLA Riddims of Jazz

About this special Members Dinner Program:

The steel pan is part of a continuum of African drumming traditions that developed on the island of Trinidad, particularly in the context of Carnival. Originally sourced from found material, the instrument is a unique marriage of highly syncopated African rhythmic traditions and Western European tonal conventions. The music most closely associated with the steel band includes Calypso - the indigenous folk music of Trinidad and Tobago - but the instrument developed a tradition of playing Western Popular and Classical music early on.

KOLA Riddims of Jazz presents a colorful repertoire that blends Caribbean rhythmic language with jazz harmony, groove-based improvisation, and contemporary stylistic influences. The program reflects the steel pan’s versatility as a modern jazz instrument while honoring its cultural roots. Sit back and enjoy an evening of good vibrations.

KOLA Riddims of Jazz is a jazz combo composed of students from the George Mason University Dewberry School of Music, representing programs in jazz studies, performance, and music technologies. The musicians of KOLA are members of the George Mason University Steel Pan Ensemble, directed by Professor Victor Provost. The ensemble is performance-oriented and is dedicated to the performance and study of steel pan music. The group presents repertoire drawn from a wide range of styles, with a particular emphasis on Caribbean musical traditions.

    Cabaret, Cocktails, & Conversation

Co-Sponsorship between Alliance for New Music-Theatre

    and

    The Arts Club of Washington

    Javier Arrey

    "Music Without Borders"

    Tuesday, February 3rd, 2026,  7:00 p.m.

    OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

    $55 Members  -  $65 Non-Members

What can you expect coming to our cabaret evenings? Sometimes familiar tunes, to be sure, but we specialize in original cabaret compositions, sometimes crossover genres, and we encourage artists to bend and push boundaries of the cabaret form and always speak to our current times, in the space and the place where we are.  We come together for an intimate experience with artists who have something to say and engage in lively conversation with the artists following every performance.

The Arts Club of Washington venue is intimate, perfect for an optimal cabaret experience.

Includes a small bites buffet and a signature cocktail created for this performance. Following the show you will meet the artist and enjoy other fine company. For each performance, the bar opens at 6:30 pm, the show starts at 7:00 pm.

    About Javier Arrey

Javier Arrey will curate his own program for the Cabaret series at the Arts Club that highlights his extensive performances around the world in many different music genres.

Javier Arrey has been heralded as one of the most sought after and versatile Belcanto baritones of the emerging generation. The Chilean born American baritone has appeared in houses like The Vienna State Opera, The Metropolitan Opera, Opéra de Monte-Carlo, Palau de Les Arts, Boston Lyric Opera, Opera Nacional de Chile, Washington National Opera and San Francisco Opera.

What drew Alliance for New Music-Theatre to Javier Arrey is not only his outstanding voice but his painstaking and methodical process in the development of a role. As he told us, “Before I ever look at the music, I read the text multiple times to try and understand it inside out. Then I explore the psychology of the person.” Javier has collaborated with Alliance for New Music-Theatre on our chamber opera “On the Road to Arivaca,” that addresses the many issues of immigration, national boundaries, and cross-cultural-and-linguistic engagement. How does one act when one has to decide in a split second on the fate of a fellow human being?

Mr. Arrey has collaborated with conductors including Eun Sun Kim, Lorin Maazel, Roberto Rizzi Brignoli, James Gaffigan, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Plácido Domingo, Anthony Walker and Marco Armiliato. His leading roles include Enrico (Lucia diLammermoor), Belcore (L’Elisir D’Amore), Malatesta (Don Pasquale), Conte di Luna (Il Trovatore), Conte Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro), Renato (Un Ballo in Maschera), Alfio (Cavalleria Rusticana), Giovanni (Don Giovanni), Jago (Otello), Riccardo (I Puritani), Diego (El último sueño de Frida y Diego) and Rodrigo (Don Carlo).

Following an acclaimed debut as Jago (Otello) at the Castleton Festival under Lorin Maazel, a performance Washington Post described as “menaced and connived but [Arrey] did so subtly and with a voice so lovely to listen to that his scheming seemed all the more threatening.” Praises came also from Mo. Lorin Maazel who published: “Jago was stunningly sung and acted by Javier Arrey [who] manages to give shape to the jealous demon within Otello”.

Javier also had the privilege and honor of performing twice in the U.S. Supreme Court for the Honorable Justices invited by Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Justice Ginsburg declared: “[Arrey] has what it takes, both as a vocal artist and as a dramatic performer, to attract new audiences to opera venues, particularly young people needed to ensure that opera will remain a vital part of the contemporary musical scene.”

In addition to his work on the opera stage, baritone Javier Arrey is a world-class interpreter of Lieder and concert repertoire. Recent performances include Mahler’s Lieder Eines Fahrenden Gesellen at Teatro Municipal in Chile and Dvořák’s Biblical Songs and Gypsy Songs in the Czech Republic.

In 2017, Mr. Arrey received the “Congressional Medal of Honor” at the National Congress of Chile in recognition of his artistic career and his social labor bringing the Opera to populations who have no access to live performances. In 2011 Javier Arrey was the winner of the CulturArte Prize at Operalia Competition in Moscow and in 2009 he was finalist at the Cardiff Singer of the World competition (Song prize). Arrey is a graduate of The Washington National Opera “Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist Program” and Dolora Zajick’s Program “Institute for Young Dramatic Voices. Javier continues to with local opera and concert companies to help develop and educate young artists.

    Yvette Spears

With a voice that carries the soul of New Orleans, and the sophistication of a modern cabaret griot, Yvette Spears-jazz vocalist, cultural envoy, and dynamic performing artist whose work interlaces music, memory, and liberation is known for her commanding narrations, her jazz-infused storytelling, and her historical productions that reimagine history through sound. Her newest offering, Chantez Les Bas Joséphine: L’Esprit Joséphine, at the Arts Club of Washington -is a Black History tribute that lifts the veil on Josephine Baker beyond the feathers and the stage lights—revealing the woman who fought fascism, challenged segregation, and used her celebrity as a force for human dignity. Drawing from Baker’s performances of her latter years including a thriumphant performance at Carnegie Hall, and interweaving narrated vignettes, Yvette Spears transforms the stage into a portal where music becomes memory, and memory becomes activism. This presentation is both homage and awakening, honoring a legacy that continues to inspire courage, artistry, and the advocate heartbeat of Josephine’s spirit.

All is Fair in Love and War

The terrors of World War II and the ensuing Cold War heavily influenced the life and work of Dmitry Shostakovich, whose timeless artistic contributions may have been what kept him tethered to this world during the height of the Communist regime. Robert Schumann’s undying romance with his wife Clara endowed his life with every possible aspect of meaning and significance, right up to its tragic ending.

Working with pre-existing material, we will black out, erase, or otherwise obscure to form new meaning. How do we as queer people create new meanings and identities from the ones we are given? Where did we clash or not fit in? And what do we do when the world seemingly wants to erase us? Open to writers of all levels of experience and backgrounds.

Nico Penaranda is a teacher in Howard University’s first-year writing program, who has been a featured reader at recent events hosted by the DC Poet Project, the Smithsonian Asian Art Museum, and the DC Public Library.

In the Writers’ Studio: on friendship with former Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky & William Miller

    Friday, March 6, 2026

    7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC - $50  ($40  for club members)

The Cheuse Center and the Arts Club of Washington bring you four evenings in celebration of the craft of writing and the art of living, inaugurated by former Poet Laureate, Roberty Pinsky.

On March 6th, 2026, the series will be inaugurated by former US Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, who went to Rutgers with Alan Cheuse and was a close friend of his for their entire adult lives. Alan Cheuse was NPRs book critic for 30 years. Pinksy will chat with William Miller, friend and colleague of Alan Cheuse’s, as well as co-founder of the Cheuse Center. The studio will also feature Alan Cheuse’s students, writer Britany Kerfoot, and Lina Patton whose novel ‘The Lake Club’ releases in the summer of 2026.

This fireside chat will include a discussion, audience participation, food, wine, and a mini lesson on craft. Doors open at 7:30pm with a wine and food reception. The chat will be from 8:30-9:30pm and we will have some wonderful audience giveaways.

The series: This series is in celebration of the tenth year anniversary of the Cheuse Center. We have created an opportunity for audiences to celebrate and contemplate their own purpose and joy, through special pairings with esteemed writers, celebrating book critic and teacher Alan Cheuse. Throughout his teaching career Cheuse held small dinner workshops and talked about life and craft with students and colleagues. His students Lina Patton and Brittany Kerfoot found them so inspiring, they decided to bring the format to the Arts Club, as fireside chats, celebrating their beloved teacher, Alan Cheuse as friend, writer, critic, and teacher.

    About Robert Pinsky:

Robert Pinsky’s recent book of poems is Proverbs of Limbo. His PoemJazz album of the same title is available on Spotify. His autobiographical prose book is Jersey Breaks. Among his books about poetry are Democracy, Culture and the Voice of Poetry and The Sounds of Poetry. His best-selling translation is The Inferno of Dante. As United States Poet Laureate (1997-2000), Pinsky founded the Favorite Poem Project, with brief videos in which thousands of American readers, of varying backgrounds, ages, and regions, read poems they admire by writers such as Elizabeth Bishop, Emily Dickinson, Langston Hughes, Pablo Neruda, Frank O’Hara, and Walt Whitman.

    About William Miller:

William Miller directed the creative writing program at George Mason University for more than two-dozen years until his retirement in 2018. During that time, he helped establish the Cheuse Center, the Fall for the Book literary festival, the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program in creative writing, and Stillhouse Press. Negotiations to bring the Poetry Daily web-based contemporary poetry distribution program to Mason began in his last year in the director’s position. He serves on the board of Fall for the Book, and is the current board chair of the Cheuse Center. He is a host of the podcast Upstart Crow, which has done indeph interviews with Cheuse Center

    Affections for Amadeus

Perhaps the greatest musical genius the world has ever known, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s innocence, joy, and sincerity lend a truly refreshing taste to his compositional output. In spite of his struggles and untimely death at 35 years old, Mozart nonetheless always found a way to cherish the sublime beauty of our world.

Since its founding in 1916, the Arts Club of Washington has called 2017 I Street, N.W.  “home.”  Join us on a guided tour of the historic clubhouse to learn more about the Arts Club, its activities and the distinguished men and women who have been members.  We will also discuss some of the fabled residents of the two mansions the Club now occupies, including President James Monroe and his First Lady Elizabeth, and Civil War General Robert MacFeely.

Please note that attendance is limited to 12 persons due to small spaces visited on the tour, thus an RSVP is required to guarantee participation.

Walk-in participants will be accommodated when possible.

    Tour is not ADA accessible.

Groups: Contact us to book your complimentary tour Tuesdays - Fridays to start between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., and Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

    OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

    Pride Poetry Workshop

Wronged Women: Hell Hath No Fury, led by Xochi Quetzali Cartland

    Tuesday, April 21, 2026

    6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC - FREE

In Postcolonial Love Poem, Natalie Diaz said "Trust your anger. It is a demand for love." For women who are socialized to be forever accommodating, how can anger be a liberatory force? In this poetry workshop, participants will be invited to engage with female figures such as Eve, Lot's Wife, Selena Quintanilla, Yolanda Saldívar, and Harley Quinn, giving these infamous women the dignity of context.

Xochi Quetzali Cartland is a queer Chicana poet and seamstress who was the 2025 Latinx in Publishing poetry mentee, and has been supported with fellowships from National Arts Strategies and Brooklyn Poets.

This project is supported in part by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Drama Committee of The Arts Club of Washington proudly welcomes Susan Derry in the new Conner and Smith musical based on the timeless poetry and personal corespondence of Emily Dickinson.

"Perhaps the most prolific writers of musicals in the Washington area who consistently get their work produced."

    Pride Poetry Workshop

Resistance: LGBTQ Poetry as an Act of Defiance, led by Gregory Adams

    Tuesday, May 19, 2026

    6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

OPEN TO THE PUBLIC - FREE

In this workshop, participants will consider the forms that resistance to the heteronormative status quo—and the limits of their own thinking—can take. We will look at poems that not only assert a queer life, but also challenge those who view that life as “less than.” Open to writers of all levels of experience and backgrounds.

Gregory Adams is a founding member of Station-to-Station, a groundbreaking collective of Black LGBTQ performance poets and writers of the 1980s, and part of the creative team who produced the documentary Fierceness Served!: The ENIK Alley Coffeehouse (2021).

This project is supported in part by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
