A pluralist who created many heteronyms and filled their world

    Library of the Arts

The 800+ volume Library of the Arts is a Member benefit and not open to the public other than on docent-led tours. The library contains books that span the wide range of Club artistic disciplines and provides a comfortable retreat to read and relax.  Works by and about Club members may be found in the collection, as well as in paintings and sculpture adorning the room.

This room is the only one on your tour which is part of original 1802 home of just four rooms, today behind (north) of the much larger 1805 mansion that was built on its front garden. This room would likely have been the children's bedroom, including Maria Monroe who would go on to become the first Presidential daughter White House bride in 1820.

Since its founding in 1916, the Arts Club of Washington has called 2017 I Street, N.W.  “home.”  Join us on a guided tour of the historic clubhouse to learn more about the Arts Club, its activities and the distinguished men and women who have been members.  We will also discuss some of the fabled residents of the two mansions the Club now occupies, including President James Monroe and his First Lady Elizabeth, and Civil War General Robert MacFeely.

Please note that attendance is limited to 12 persons due to small spaces visited on the tour, thus an RSVP is required to guarantee participation.

Walk-in participants will be accommodated when possible.

Imelda Staunton (The Crown, Follies) performs with her daughter Bessie Carter (Bridgerton) for the first time, reuniting with director Dominic Cooke.  Image: National Theatre of Great Britain/NT Live

Vivie Warren is a woman ahead of her time. Her mother, however, is a product of the old patriarchal order. Exploiting it has earned Mrs. Warren a fortune – but at what cost?

Filmed live in London, this new production reunites Staunton with director Dominic Cooke (FolliesGood), exploring the clash between morality and independence, traditions and progress.

Mrs. Warren's Profession is play written by George Bernard Shaw in 1893, and first performed in London in 1902. It is one of the three plays Shaw published as Plays Unpleasant in 1898, alongside The Philanderer and Widowers' Houses. The play is about a former prostitute, now a madam (brothel proprietor), who attempts to come to terms with her disapproving daughter. It is a problem play, offering social commentary to illustrate the idea that the act of prostitution was not caused by moral failure but by economic necessity. Elements of the play were borrowed from Shaw's 1882 novel Cashel Byron's Profession, about a man who becomes a boxer due to limited employment opportunities. (Wikipedia)

NT Live films theatre on Britain’s most exciting stages then screens it in thousands of cinemas around the globe. Their productions have been seen by an audience of over 12 million people since the project began in 2010.

Many important meetings were likely held in this room when the house as served as the British Legation, forerunner to today's British Embassy, from 1821-1836, and later as the homes of members of the French and Austrian diplomatic corps.

The George Fulginiti Series: Cabaret, Cocktails, & Conversation

Co-Sponsorship Between Alliance for New Music-Theatre

    Arts Club of Washington

    In Flanders Fields

    Tuesday, November 11th, 2025,  7:00 pm

    OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

    $55 Members  -  $65 Non-Members

One True Sentence: A Cabaret Evening with Singer-Songwriter and Broadway Bound Composer Josh Cleveland.

This Veterans Day, Alliance for New Music-Theatre artists John Boulanger, Alan Naylor, and Cara Schaefer will transport audience members back in time some hundred years in our nation’s history. Portraying noted essayist, biographer, and playwright John Jay Chapman, his wife, Elizabeth Astor Chapman, and son Victor, they reminisce about Victor’s signing up with the French Foreign Legion while on a family trip to Europe.

The evening represents a “Special Event” presentation and partnership with the Arts Club of Washington and will take place in the historic Monroe House, which served as the Presidential residence after the White House was damaged during the War of 1812.

               Victor Chapman in 1916

The program commemorates the story of Victor Chapman, who joined the Foreign Legion in September 1914. After a year in the trenches, he joined the “Lafayette Escadrille,” the Legion’s American Aviation Corps, and was the first American aviator to perish in the conflict, all before the United States entered the war in 1917.

The program will serve as a “salon event,” and invitation into the Chapman’s home as they read from Victor’s letters from the front, interspersed with poetry and songs written during the “Great War.” Selections include the iconic “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae and poems by other noted war poets including Wilfred Owen, Alan Seeger, and Siegfried Sassoon.

You’ll also hear American popular songs by George M. Cohan and others of the period, settings of John McCrae’s famous title poem by Charles Ives and John Phillip Sousa, and a group of settings of A.E. Housman’s “A Shropshire Lad” poems by George Butterworth, a British composer who died in the “War to End All Wars.”

Boulanger curated the first version of this program in 2017, with founding company member and soprano Laura Lewis, which was presented at the Woodrow Wilson House to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the United States’ entry into the war.

Boulanger and Schaefer were seen last fall as Julius Caesar and Wo-Man Ray in New Music-Theatre’s original opera The Man Ray Project: Caesar & The Mannequin by composer Andrew Earle Simpson. They reunite here to pay tribute not only to the men who died in WWI but the artists whose expressions led us through the arc from a vision of heroic combat to the grim and heartbreaking realities of that terrible conflict.

They are joined by Helen Hayes award-winner Alan Naylor, who will serve as pianist in addition to portraying the young Victor Chapman.

Period attire, medals and pearls, are encouraged.

The Arts Club will provide a small bites buffet and beverages, included in the price of the ticket. The salon program starts at 7:00 pm.

For over two centuries, this elegant room has hosted events from President Monroe’s inaugural reception in 1817 to chamber music recitals under the baton of 1940–1941 Club President Hans Kindler, founding Director of the National Symphony Orchestra. The Reception Room features a notable fireplace surround by George Andrews, a Dublin-born specialist in composition ornament who helped spread Robert Adam’s Neoclassical interiors to America, and whose surrounds were installed in the White House, Monticello, Montpelier, and Dumbarton House.

The Reception Room serves as the members' lounge and is not open to the public other than on guided tours and programmed events.

What can you expect coming to our cabaret evenings? With

    Colleen Brisport Sequeda, teacher

    6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

    DOORS OPEN at 5:45 p.m.

Enrich your yoga practice in the iconic spaces of The Arts Club of Washington, held within the historic James Monroe House. In this accessible-to-all-levels, 60 minute, vinyasa yoga class, you will be led through a movement practice that draws on the creative energy of a space dedicated to the visual, performing, and literary arts.

Yoga reconnects us to our bodies and souls much in the same way that artistic mediums reconnect us to our culture and humanity. Classes will be set to classical and chamber music to connect you, not only with your inner self, but also with the vibrant artistic expression that defines The Arts Club.

We invite you on this journey of embodiment that blends wellness, music, and art-filled surroundings into a deeply moving mind and body experience. Join us in this gentle and transformative yoga practice.

*Complimentary tea and water will be offered before and after class and students may bring their own covered drinks to refresh themselves during practice.

*Attendees are encouraged to bring their own yoga or fitness mat. If a mat is needed for $5 rental please contact the teacher, Colleen Brisport Sequeda.
