  About the Artist:

  Chenyu Wang, 23-year-old pianist from Zhuhai, China, is currently studying at the New England Conservatory in Boston (MM 26’, GD 28’) with Alexander Korsantia and Alessio Bax.

  Chenyu has performed at concert venues such as Jordan Hall in Boston, St James’s Piccadilly and Steinway Hall in London, Wiener Saal of Universitat Mozarteum Salzburg, Concert Hall of Uniwersytet Muzyczny Fryderyka Chopina in Warsaw, and Oratorio di Santa Caterina Cervo, among others.

  In June 2024 she earned her Bachelor of Music degree with First-Class Honours from the Royal Academy of Music in London, where she studied with Ian Fountain on a full scholarship. Upon graduation, she was awarded the Edna Bralesford Piano Prize for achieving the highest recital mark of the year. She was awarded the Polonsky Foundation Fellowship with a full scholarship to attend the 2024 Aspen Music Festival and School.

  Beyond Aspen, Chenyu has participated in music festivals such as the Oxford Piano Festival, Morningside Music Bridge, Internationale Sommerakademie Mozarteum, among others. She has worked with distinguished musicians such as Arie Vardi, Michel Béroff, Steven Kovacevich, Arnulf von Arnim, Eleanor Wong, Aquiles Delle Vigne, and Sa Chen, among others.

  From 2014 to 2020, Chenyu studied with Tiandong Huang at the Music School attached to Xinghai Conservatory of Music in Guangzhou, China, where she won multiple scholarship and concerto prizes, gave recital at Guangzhou Steinway Hall, and won 1^st prize at Xinghai Cup Piano Competition.

  
  

  THE KEYBOARD CHARITABLE TRUST

  for Young Professional Performers

  Founded in 1991, the Keyboard Charitable Trust’s mission is to help young keyboard players reduce the element of chance in building a professional musical career. The Trust identifies the most talented young performers (aged 18-30) and assists their development by offering them opportunities to perform throughout the world. For the most gifted, this means débuts in London, New York, Mexico, Berlin, Rome and other music capitals.

  In collaboration with its partners worldwide, the Keyboard Trust has developed a circuit of some fifty venues in seven principal countries, from the most prestigious concert halls to locations where classical music is rarely heard. Over the past thirty-three years, the Trust has presented over 300 young international pianists, historic keyboard players and organists (aged 18-30) in over 900 concerts worldwide.

  With such notable musicians as the late Claudio Abbado, Alfred Brendel and Evgeny Kissin among its Trustees, this formula has proved its worth: many Trust artists receive an offer of a new engagement, a broadcast, a recording or management. Nearly half of the artists have subsequently made serious professional musical careers.

  Recent years have seen a further expansion of the Trust’s work in Germany, Italy and Russia as well as in the USA where the distinguished conductor, the late Lorin Maazel, invited the Trust to present its artists at his Festival Theatre in Virginia. 

  Recent highlights include Elia Cecino winning the New Orleans International Competition in 2022 and the Valencia Iturbi International Competition in 2023; Pedro Lopez Salas winning Second Prize at the Ferrol International Piano Competition in Galicia in 2022; and George X. Fu winning BBC Music Magazine’s Newcomer Award for his album ‘Mirrors’ in 2024.

  This 6-week session is structured to accommodate all artistic levels from the beginner to the intermediate. Students learn ways to improve their paintings through composition, color and technique using all mediums, including OIL and ACRYLIC paint.  Instruction includes individual focus as well as short demos.   Quentin Walston

  Quentin Walston is a composer, pianist, and educator from the Washington DC area whose work bridges the legacy of jazz's greatest composers with contemporary innovation. He performs with his jazz trio and as a solo pianist.  His latest album, “Retro Future,” combines influences from Thelonious Monk to current groups like The Bad Plus. Quentin reaches over 225,000 followers through his social media channels dedicated to jazz history and appreciation, where he regularly celebrates the contributions of jazz pioneers such as Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis. His books How to Teach Jazz & Improvisation and Jazz Piano Like A Pro have been featured on All About Jazz and podcasts around the world, equips teachers to share jazz with students of all ages, instruments, and abilities.   About the Artists:

  The Illuminos Quartet, comprised of violinists Yuanju Liu and Camden Stohl, violist Brian Shoop, and cellist David Agia, formed at the University of Maryland while pursuing their individual graduate degrees. Each member of the quartet now enjoys freelance professional careers in the Washington, DC and Philadelphia metro areas, appearing regularly with groups such as the Annapolis, Allentown, Fairfax, and Mid-Atlantic symphony orchestras, Georgetown Chamber Players, Live Arts Maryland, and others. They first discovered their shared musical ambitions as colleagues in the same chamber music seminar, where their friendship quickly made for a strong musical connection. The quartet then further solidified itself through its role as the Young Emerging Artist Quartet at the Interlochen Center for the Arts' Chamber Music Camp under the tutelage of Artistic Director David Salness. Now a recurring role each summer, it was there where they discovered their love for the late Beethoven quartets, and sharing their passion for chamber music with others. These experiences have strengthened their commitment to both artistic excellence and meaningful community engagement. 

  
  

  This past summer, the Illuminos Quartet served as the Fellowship Quartet at the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music, where they worked closely with the Apple Hill Quartet. They brought their energy and storytelling through music to the local community with concerts in Keene, NH and performed works by Caroline Shaw, Joaquin Turina, and Ludwig van Beethoven on the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music's Summer Concert Series. Additionally, they returned to Interlochen as the Young Emerging Artist Quartet, coaching adult students in chamber music and performing an evening salon concert. They find a lot of passion in bringing their art to public places through performance and outreach in order to inspire people and strengthen community. The quartet has given educational performances and masterclasses at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, MD, and looks forward to engagements including concerts and masterclasses spanning the east coast between South Carolina and New Jersey this fall. ISQ is excited to be traveling to Wilmington, NC this fall, as it is Camden's hometown. When not rehearsing and enjoying music together, members of the Quartet enjoy baking, playing board games together, gathering for brunch, and taking nature breaks.

  Violinist Siwoo Kim returns from New York to dazzle our audience with dozens of diabolical works of virtuosity and emotional intensity, commemorating All Hallows’ Eve in “classical” style.

  Tartini dreamed that the Devil himself serenaded him with an enticing violin solo, which he promptly penned the next morning for us all to enjoy, called the “Devil’s Trill” Sonata.

  Eugene Ysaÿe’s bard-like virtuoso solo sonata draws inspiration from Bach’s violin partitas, as well as from the Gregorian Chant “Dies Irae,” used as song of for the dead in Requiem masses. Schubert’s Erlkönig is based on Goethe's poem about a father frantically riding through a stormy night to save his sick, hallucinating son from a malevolent supernatural Elf-King.

  Paganini was allegedly the best violinist ever to have lived, reputedly because he had sold his soul to Satan in exchange for his abilities, explicitly demonstrated in his composition “La Campanella.”

Yvette Neisser and Patricia Fisher read from Venezuelan poet María Teresa Ogliastri's From the Diary of Madame Mao, winner of the inaugural Carnegie Mellon University Press Translation Prize; Francisco Aragón reads from Spanish generation of ’27 poet Gerardo Diego's Handbook of Foams, followed by a discussion moderated by Katie King and book signing.

  
  

  Presenter Bios

  Francisco Aragón’s work as a translator includes four books, most recently Handbook of Foams/Manual de espumas (2026) by Gerardo Diego. A native of San Francisco, California, he’s also translated the work of Rubén Darío, Federico García Lorca, and Francisco X. Alarcón. For more information: http://franciscoaragon.net

   

  Patricia Bejarano Fisher is a former Spanish instructor and learning materials developer at the University of Maryland. Her translations include poems in Laura Shovan’s The Last Fifth Grade of Emerson Elementary; Bridges, a trilingual collection of poems by Lidia Kosk in Polish, English, and Spanish (unpublished); and the co-translation of Maria Teresa Ogliastri’s South Pole/Polo Sur.

   

  Katie King is a journalist and literary translator who worked as a foreign correspondent and editor in Europe and Latin America and holds a PhD in Hispanic Studies. Her most recent translation, Marta Sanz’s My Clavicle and Other Massive Misalignments (Unnamed Press 2025), has been shortlisted for the ALTA/Spain-USA Foundation Translation Prize. She also translates the poetry and prose of Spain’s Luis García Montero.

   

  Yvette Neisser is an award-winning poet, Spanish translator, and founder of the DC-Area Literary Translators Network (DC-ALT). Her poems, translations, and essays have appeared in Foreign Policy in Focus, Tikkun, Virginia Quarterly Review, and Split This Rock’s The Quarry.   Gerardo Diego (1896-1987) was a member of Spain’s noted “generation of ’27.” In 1979, he was awarded the Cervantes Prize. A pioneering avant-garde poet and co-founder of the Ultraist movement, Manual de espumas (1925) was his breakthrough work in his creationist mode.

  Since its founding in 1916, The Arts Club of Washington has called the National Registered Historic Landmark address of 2017 I (eye) Street, N.W. “home.”  Join us on a guided tour of the historic clubhouse to learn more about The Arts Club, its activities, and the distinguished men and women who have been members. We will also discuss some of the fabled residents of the two mansions the organization now occupies, including the former homes of President James Monroe and his First Lady Elizabeth, and Civil War General Robert MacFeely.  

  The Friday docent-led tours are followed by our free, Friday Noon Concerts series, featuring world-class musicians on our historic stage. If you'd like to stay for the concert, please RSVP separately through our events page.

  About the Artists:

  Zoe Kushubar has been hailed by the Mittelbadische Presse as a violinist who “plays with a fiery spirit and top nuance.” She has performed across the Eastern United States and in Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic. As a soloist, Zoe has performed with the Piedmont Chamber Orchestra, the Converse Symphony Orchestra, and the Carolina Youth Symphony, with whom she made her orchestral debut at fifteen. She has made appearances at a variety of venues including the Kennedy Center, Strathmore Music Center, Imperial Palace in Vienna, Verizon Hall in Philadelphia, Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, and The Village at Summerville, SC.
  
  Zoe enjoys a career as both a modern violinist and as a performer of early music. Her most recent engagements include performances with the Handel Choir of Baltimore, Smithsonian Academy Orchestra, International Pride Orchestra, Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, and District Strings. She is also a rotating member of the Live Wire String Quartet, which gives educational performances at assisted living and retirement communities around Baltimore. She joined the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra as a member of the second violin section in the fall of 2025. In addition to performing, Zoe is an active violin teacher; she is on the faculty at the International School of Music, Opal Music Studio, and Stacey Rae Sinclair Music, LLC.
  
  A native of South Carolina, Zoe received undergraduate degrees in Chemistry and Violin Performance from Converse University, and she received her Master of Music from Florida State University in 2022. She is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of Maryland, where she served as a Graduate Assistant for three years. Her past and current mentors include Lyn Acosta, Jennifer John, Sarah Johnson, Courtney LeBauer, Shannon Thomas, and David Salness. 

  
  

  Daniel Shomper is an active performer, chamber musician and teacher.  The Baltimore Sun has praised his ‘virtuoso playing’ and complimented his ‘masterful performance’ and ‘lyrical expression.’  He has performed at venues such as the Kennedy Center, the National Art Gallery, and the Washington Arts Club, among others.  Additionally, he has performed concerts and in prestigious music festivals in the United States and abroad, including venues in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Prague, Budapest, Helsinki, Quebec, Seseña Nuevo, Avila and Madrid.
  
  Dr. Shomper is the founder and director of the Annapolis Cellovision Workshop, an organization that combines under one umbrella all of  Dr. Shomper’s passions - performance, education, and creating community-based collaborations.  ACW began with the Annapolis Cello Festival, which includes a workshop for adult amateur cellists followed by a week long institute for young cellists ages 10 - 18, and faculty performances!  It takes place at the beginning of August.  ACW has expanded to include a chamber music institute for all classical instruments for young musicians ages 10 - 18 at the end of June,  and an All-State preparatory workshop in September, and more exciting educational opportunities are planned for the future!
  
  Dr. Shomper is passionate teacher.  He is on faculty at the Annapolis Symphony Academy, the Riverhawk Summer Institute, the Annapolis Cello Festival, maintains a robust private studio, offers group classes through ACW and is on faculty at Anne Arundel Community College.  He is a member of the Annapolis Symphony, performs regularly with the Charleston Symphony and many other orchestras in DC, Baltimore, and Pennsylvania.
  
  Dr. Shomper received his DMA from the University of Maryland where he studied with David Hardy, Peter Wiley and the Guarneri Quartet, Kenneth Slowik and Evelyn Elsing.
  
  Jessica McKee is an active collaborator throughout the D.C. metropolitan area. Passionate about chamber music, she is a founding member of the Iris Piano Trio, an outreach-based chamber group that began at Charles E. Smith Life Communities in Rockville, MD. She has held adjunct teaching positions at various local institutions including Montgomery Community College, The University of Maryland and Washington Adventist University. She is currently Staff Collaborative pianist at The University of Maryland, performing for recitals throughout the academic year. Outside the university, she is an extremely active performer, frequently collaborating with both students and professionals in recordings, recitals and chamber music concerts in the D.C. area as well as throughout the United States. Her playing can be heard on professional recordings Consonant Connections and A Winters Night.
  
  McKee holds both her Masters and Doctoral of Musical Arts degrees from the University of Maryland where she studied with Rita Sloan and worked closely with the Maryland Opera Studio as well as the brass, string and wind faculties. McKee also attended the University of Michigan where she studied piano with Logan Skelton and Douglas Humphreys and played violin in the Philharmonic Orchestra. McKee maintains a small private teaching studio at her home in Maryland where she lives with her husband, her two young daughters, her cat and her dog.

  Mandala translates literally from the ancient Sanskrit as "circle". Circles are the first image children draw. Sacred geometric symbols that represent the universe and wholeness, mandalas have been used for meditation & healing; they can be found in every culture, in nature, architecture, art & spiritual practice worldwide for millennia. In this workshop we will explore color meanings and how they can give us insights into ourselves as we design and color, or just color, our own personal mandala.

  Come rally your spirits with the spontaneous mirth and joy of iMusical, the improvised musical phenomenon! Stirring up musical mayhem on stage at Washington ImprovTheater for nearly 20 years, iMusical takes a unique playful and heartfelt musical journey with each performance, all inspired by an audience suggestion.

  The Washington Post calls iMusical “spot on.” The cast has performed to standing ovations in multiple comedy festivals including in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and New York as well as at venues across the Washington, D.C., area.

  If you’ve never seen an improvised musical before, or even if you have, you will be truly amazed! A group of performers and musicians will literally create a new comedic musical – storyline, action, lyrics, music – that has never been performed before and will never be performed again.   About the Artists:

  Founded by violinist Hoorig Taline Poochikian and cellist Emma Hays Johnson, Ixia Chamber Music is a Maryland-based nonprofit dedicated to bringing audiences closer to music through engaging performances, artistic exploration, and education. Ixia presents chamber music from across the centuries, pairing familiar masterworks with lesser-known and contemporary compositions. Through storytelling, historical context, and connections to other art forms, Ixia invites audiences to discover new perspectives on the music and its relationship to their own experiences.

       For this performance, founding artists Poochikian and Johnson are joined by guest violinist Celaya Kirchner and violist Santiago Vazquez-Loredo. Together, these accomplished chamber musicians bring a wealth of experience performing with orchestras, chamber ensembles, and festivals throughout the United States and abroad. Now in its inaugural 2026–2027 season, Ixia seeks to create musical experiences that inspire curiosity, encourage connection, and leave audiences with something to carry beyond the concert hall.

  Ms. Fleming will discuss the vast potential of the creative arts – music, dance, and synchronous movements – to sooth, comfort and connect us to each other, and thereby promote health and well-being across all cultures, religions, and races. 

  Deepak Chopra describes the anthology “Music and Mind,” edited by Renee Flemming, as the most comprehensive compilation of the role of music in every aspect of life, from biological evolution to our own mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. The meaning of life is in the music of life.

  
  

  Soprano Renee Fleming - Renée Fleming is one of the most highly acclaimed singers of our time, performing on the stages of the world’s great opera houses and concert halls. Honored with five Grammy ®  Awards and the U.S. National Medal of Arts, she has sung for momentous occasions from the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony to the Diamond Jubilee Concert for Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace. In 2014, she brought her voice to a vast new audience when she became the first classical artist ever to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. In December 2023, she was one of five recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors. Other notable honors have included the Crystal Award from the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur from the French government, Germany's Cross of the Order of Merit, Sweden's Polar Music Prize and honorary membership in England's Royal Academy of Music.

  Fleming is a prominent advocate for awareness of the impact of music and the creative arts on health and neuroscience, winning a Research!America award for Impact on Public Opinion. In May 2023, Fleming was appointed by the World Health Organization as a Goodwill Ambassador for Arts and Health. In 2024, she launched the Renée Fleming Neuroarts Investigator Awards in partnership with the NeuroArts Blueprint Initiative at Johns Hopkins University and the Aspen Institute. Presented annually, the grants fund interdisciplinary research by early career scientists in collaboration with arts practitioners. In April 2024, Penguin Random House published Fleming's anthology Music and Mind: Harnessing the Arts for Health and Wellness. In January 2025, Fleming was appointed as an inaugural member of the World Economic Forum Global Arts and Culture Council. Ms. Fleming has presented her program Music and the Mind in more than 50 cities around the world.

  Since its founding in 1916, The Arts Club of Washington has called the National Registered Historic Landmark address of 2017 I (eye) Street, N.W. “home.”  Join us on a guided tour of the historic clubhouse to learn more about The Arts Club, its activities, and the distinguished men and women who have been members. We will also discuss some of the fabled residents of the two mansions the organization now occupies, including the former homes of President James Monroe and his First Lady Elizabeth, and Civil War General Robert MacFeely.  

  The Friday docent-led tours are followed by our free, Friday Noon Concerts series, featuring world-class musicians on our historic stage. If you'd like to stay for the concert, please RSVP separately through our events page.

  About the Artists:

  Yuanju Liu is a Taiwanese violinist praised for her strong stage presence and captivating artistry, and a sought-after freelancer throughout the DMV area. Equally at home as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral leader, she is a violinist of the Illuminos Quartet, founder of Yuanju Music LLC, and faculty member of the DC Youth Orchestra Program. Driven by a passion for connecting audiences through innovative and meaningful programming, Dr. Liu is recognized for championing both beloved masterworks and underrepresented repertoire, with recent highlight performing Vivaldi’s Spring concerto, serving as concertmaster for the MOS Opera's The Merry Wives of Windsor and La finta giardiniera, and collaborations with the Dover Quartet at the Artosphere Festival, alongside former members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra as part of the Juliani Ensemble.
  
  Dr. Liu earned a Performance Certificate and Master of Music degree in Violin Performance with distinction from DePaul University, where she studied under renowned violinist Janet Sung. She received her Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music, studying with Ayano Ninomiya, Robin Scott, and the internationally acclaimed Ying Quartet. She recently completed her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Maryland with David Salness.

  SUSAN CLAASSEN, a resident of La Jolla, CA, evolved to “Emeritus” after 50 years as Managing Artistic Director with Tucson’s Invisible Theatre (IT). She was the recipient of the 1982 Woman on the Move Award in the Arts, the 1985 Governor’s Award for Women Who Create, the 1993 Humanitarian Torch Award for efforts on behalf of people living with AIDS, the 1994 and 1998 TUSD Superintendent’s Honor Roll Award for her exceptional work with Special Education Arts Programming, and a 1996 Distinguished Service Award from the State Federation for Exceptional Children for her commitment to arts education for special populations. Susan was named as the recipient of The City of Hope’s 1999 Woman of the Year “Spirit of Life” Award, was selected as one of Tucson Lifestyle’s ten most admired women, honored as one of the Jewish Federation’s 13 Extraordinary Women, selected as one of Tucson Pima Arts Council’s 25th anniversary honorees, honored as one of Arizona’s 48 Most Intriguing Women and recently received The Women’s Foundation of Arizona 2024 Award for Daring Generations. Susan has been a member of Actors’ Equity Association (the professional actors’ union) for 50 years. Some of her most memorable IT roles have been Vi in NATIVES, Bella in LOST IN YONKERS, Alice B. Toklas in GERTRUDE STEIN AND A COMPANION, The Woman in LAUGHING WILD, Hannah in CROSSING DELANCEY, Shirley in SHIRLEY VALENTINE and Trudy and all in THE SEARCH FOR SIGNS OF INTELLIGENT LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE, which also toured to Nantucket, Massachusetts. Her production of A CONVERSATION WITH EDITH HEAD is touring nationally and was featured in the 2006 Republic of Georgia International Theatre Festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe August 2007, and played London’s West End in July/ August 2008. She received a prestigious LA Stage Alliance Ovation Best Actress Nomination in 2011 for her portrayal of Edith Head, was Phoenix New Times Best Actress 2012 and was recently nominated as Best Solo Performance by The San Francisco Bay Area Critics Association. As Managing Artistic Director of the Invisible Theatre, she has produced and directed over 700 productions, including such favorites as the world premiere of LETTERS TO SALA, A SHAYNA MAIDEL, the award winning THE IMMIGRANT, LEAVING IOWA, IN THE MOOD, LOOPED and EMERGENCY. In addition to her work with the Invisible Theatre, she has been a consultant and director for the Waterfront Playhouse and Red Barn Theatre in Key West, Florida, and directed I WON’T DANCE at NY’s famed Rainbow and Stars Cabaret and St. Paul’s prestigious Ordway Theatre. Susan is a member of the League of Professional Theatre Women. Susan has written and produced 2 award winning video projects: CHILDREN AREN’T WATERPROOF for the Tucson Drowning Prevention Committee and READY, SET, READ for the Tucson Public Library. Susan is a leader among Arizona Arts Educators and served on the disability awareness committee for Tucson Unified School District (TUSD). She has established many innovative projects, including the drama program at the state prison and Project Pastime -- an exemplary multi- disciplinary arts program for mentally challenged students that focuses on ability rather than disAbility and is the subject of the award-winning documentary SUCH GOOD FRIENDS.   The Visionary Committee of the Arts Club of Washington presents Dr. Nancy G. Heller, esteemed Art & Dance Historian. Dr. Heller is the author of the seminal treatise, Women Artists: An Illustrated History, first published in 1987 and forthcoming in its Fifth Edition in November 2026.

  
  

  Arts Club Member and Choreographer Dana Tai Soon Burgess will interview Dr. Heller about their shared interest in women in the art-historical canon and stories of resilience in changing sociopolitical times. Dr. Heller also will present an illustrated lecture covering several contemporary women artists newly included in her book’s forthcoming Fifth Edition. Books will be available for signing at the event.
