About this Special Program:

Join us for an illustrated journey through the captivating history of the Bal Bohème, The Arts Club's legendary costume gala that enchanted Washington society from 1922 to 1986. Resident Member Bruce Fries will present a visual exploration of this remarkable tradition, featuring rare photographs, vintage invitations, newspaper clippings, and fascinating stories from the balls that defined an era.

Highlights from the presentation will include:

  • How the Bal Bohème began as a simple Halloween party in 1922 and evolved into one of Washington's most anticipated social events
  • The spectacular 1934 Bal Bohème Circus, featuring clowns, acrobats, and sideshow attractions that filled the Willard Hotel ballroom with more than 1,000 guests
  • The artist who arrived as Queen Elizabeth I on a prancing white steed (city ordinance required the horse to remain outside)
  • Gene Floyd's prize-winning Louis XIV costume that took 800 man-hours and 60 pounds of materials to create
  • Memorable themes ranging from “Castles in the Air" and "Court of King Loony XIII on the Moon" to "Pictures at an Exhibition" and “Latin America Fiesta”
  • Prestigious patrons including First Ladies Eleanor Roosevelt, Bess Truman, Mamie Eisenhower, and ambassadors from around the world

Bruce is leading efforts to revive this storied tradition. Learn how the Bal Bohème raised funds for the Club, built community among artists and patrons, and created unforgettable moments of theatrical magic.
