Dazzling music and hilarious stories about composers' surprising day jobs...because even Mozart had to pay the bills!
Composers didn't just write music-- they dealt with cheeky students, demanding critics, and headstrong bosses. District5 brings their stories to life in a concert full of humor, drama, and dazzling works by Mozart, Mahler, Ravel, and Coleman.
About the Artists:
Now in its twelfth season, District5 is recognized as one of the most innovative chamber music ensembles in the Washington, D.C., area, known for blending passion, humor, and virtuosity with unique programming. In 2024, they received a Paul R. Judy Center grant for The Queentet Project; a drag symphonic story hour, commissioning Gorgeously, You! by Christen Taylor Holmes. Their debut recording of Chopin Preludes came out in 2018, and their 2024 project "Forgotten Dances" highlights works by marginalized composers. District5 has also commissioned Pandemic Suite featuring South African and American composers, recorded And Then by Jessica Krash, and earned a Chamber Music America commission with Evis Sammoutis. With ‘Transcriber-in-Residence’ David Plylar, they have created nearly 100 original transcriptions, showcasing lesser-known music and composers.
