Technology has seemed to have a strangehold on our lives. How do we become untethered from big tech’s domination, detox from technology addiction, and reintegrate technology in our lives in a more conducive and meaningful way? Rob Reich, Mehran Sahami, and Jeremy Weinstein, authors of the groundbreaking book “System Error- How Big Tech Went Wrong, and How We Can Reboot,” discuss these challenges and offer some solutions in an interview with Henry Sienkiewicz, President of the Arts Club of Washington and Adjunct Professor in the Technology Management Program at Georgetown University. Reich is a Professor of Political Science at Stanford University, Mehran Sahami is James and Ellenor Chesebrough Professor of Engineering at Stanford, and Jeremy Weinstein is Professor of Political Science at Stanford.
Review in Publisher’s Weekly-
"The authors explore major issues that society needs to grapple with: the rise in the outsourcing of decision-making to algorithms, the immense amount of user data collected by tech companies, increasing automation, and the proliferation of hate speech and disinformation online. Their suggestions for how the country might better balance democracy and technology are evenhanded and nuanced . . . Never falling into the trap of offering easy answers over deep analysis, this study is worth a look for readers worried about the outsize influence of technology on their lives and society."
Review by Sayantani Sanyal, Analytics Insight-
“System Error exposes how big tech’s unstoppable focus on optimization is driving us towards a future that enforces discrimination, ends the concept of privacy, supports replacing human laborers, and encourages misinformation. They claim that the owners of Facebook, Google, Amazon, and other such companies have brought more ill than good. As systems thinkers, they despise democracy, and favor a technocratic view.
As the dominance of big tech has become a global dilemma, the authors share their ideas and insights into what is happening and how we can let go of the control that technology holds over us.”
