present a

Private Tour:

At Home With the Monroes

Federal Period Rooms of the

Daughters of the American Revolution

Museum

Tuesday, February 20th, 11:00 a.m.

Limited to Members and one Guest

The 31 period rooms recreated by D.A.R. State Chapters reflect American domestic interiors from the late 17th to early 20th century. Club members are invited to join our volunteer docents* on an educational tour that will focus on six interiors that could be similar to how our historic clubhouse would have been furnished during the Monroes' 1811-1817 residency.

After the White House burned in 1814, among the furniture that President James Monroe and First Lady Elizabeth ordered from France to refurnish the home were gilded chairs from France. Legislation was promptly passed to ensure future furnishings would be made by American craftsman when feasible. On our tour, we will see the actual mahogany chairs that were made to replace their French counterparts, and learn about the Monroes' fondness for French design developed in 1794-96 when James Monroe served as our Minister to France during some of the most turbulent years of the French Revolution.

Free, but RSVP is required for participation, which is limited to 10.

*Volunteer docents lead public tours of The Arts Club of Washington each Friday at 11:15 a.m.  To learn more about the docent program, contact Club Historian Martin Murray

The discussion will be led by Patrick Sheary, the museum's Curator of Furnishings and Historic Interiors.
