Johannes Brahms - Hungarian Dance No. 2 in D minor (four hands)
Robert Schumann - Dichterliebe op. 49
Im wunderschönen Monat Mai
Aus meinen Tränen spriessen
Die Rose, die Lilie, die Taube
Wenn ich in deine Augen seh'
Ich will meine Seele tauchen
Johaness Brahms - Ungarische Tänze No. 11 (four hands)
Robert Schumann - Dichterliebe op. 49
Im Rhein, im heiligen Strome
Ich grolle nicht
Und wüssten's die Blumen, die kleinen
Das ist ein Flöten und Geigen
Hör ich das Liedchen klingen
Ein Jüngling liebt ein Mädchen
Am leuchtenden Sommermorgen
Ich hab' im Traum geweinet
Allnächtlich im Traume
Aus alten Märchen
Die alten, bösen Lieder
Alan Naylor is an award winning actor, singer, and pianist who currently resides in Washington DC. Growing up in St. Louis Missouri, he received training in piano starting at age 5 and began a love for the classic American musical. In high school he started work as a professional actor, was trained by Opera Theatre of St. Louis, and began to win competitions and accolades for his classical singing and storytelling ability. These abilities were further developed at St. Olaf College where he soloed and toured with the world renowned St. Olaf Choir, and at Washington University in St. Louis where he earned a master's degree in Opera Performance.
His varied skill set as a musician and performer make him uniquely suited to the genre of Art Song and the creation of "song cycle-esque" recitals. The expressive nuance of poetry, character, and musicality find their culmination in the Lieder of such masters as Schumann, and the performer must be adept in all aspects of expression, including piano, to fully realize the artistic potential and communication of such work. Alan is just such a performer, having recently won the Best Actor in a Musical Helen Hayes Award for for his work on Jacques Brel, who was himself a twentieth century master of Art Song which bridged the gap into popular music.
Residents of DC may have seen him perform at The Kennedy Center, Strathmore, Studio Theatre, Olney Theatre, Theatre Alliance, Washington National Opera, Adventure Theater, as well as at various churches and recital series. His current project is On the Town with Olney Theatre, which runs until the end of July.
Barbara Wilkinson is a classical pianist by training but considers herself a collaborative artist by birthright. Raised in a musical family where life was infused with music, Barbara is most fulfilled making music with others. Her career has offered numerous such opportunities, including performing with Belgian baritone Jose van Dam, appearing with the acclaimed National Broadway Chorus, serving as a staff pianist at American University, coaching young artists in Washington National Opera’s summer institute, founding and directing the female vocal ensemble Senza Nome, and motivating musicians of all ages and levels through her playing and coaching.
Barbara is particularly thrilled to perform with the gifted Alan Naylor. The creation of this program has been a collaboration from the start and is a finely crafted program of art song and duo piano repertoire which synthesizes the voice and piano into a perfectly balanced team. We hope to inspire and enlighten you!
A native North Carolinian, Barbara holds degrees in Piano Performance from UNC-Greensboro and the University of Michigan. Barbara serves Unity Center of DC as Director of Music and offers piano and vocal coaching from her private studio. For contact information, please see www.dcpianoandvoice.com.
