Audrey Andrist hails from Saskatchewan, James Stern from New York City and Steven Honigberg from Chicago. All three are graduates of The Juilliard School of Music. The Andrist-Stern-Honigberg trio met at the inaugural 1988 Steans Institute program at Ravinia for young professional artists, where they participated as students. Later they formed their trio.
As a youth Andrist garnered first prizes at the Mozart International, San Antonio International, Eckhardt-Gramatté and Juilliard Concerto Competitions. Honigberg won competitions to solo with the Youth, Civic and Chicago Symphonies. He was chosen by Mstislav Rostropovich to join the National Symphony Orchestra at age 21. Stern has performed with the Smithsonian Chamber Players and is in demand at the Smithsonian Museums, National Gallery, Phillips Collection and the Library of Congress.
Each artist has appeared extensively in the Washington, DC area separately and together as a Trio including at the Library of Congress and at the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center. This past June they recorded their second album for Centaur Records which includes works by Tailleferre, Montsalvatge and Korngold.
Stern has recorded the complete Sonatas and Partitas by J.S. Bach and is currently professor at University of Maryland. Andrist has recorded major solo works by Robert Schumann and teaches at the Washington Conservatory and the University of Maryland-Baltimore County. Honigberg has recorded the complete music for cello and piano by Ludwig van Beethoven and Frédéric Chopin with his mother, Carol Honigberg and teaches at the NSO Summer Music Institute and at Georgetown University.
