· The Alamo is one of the most famous and controversial events in American history. In this online interview by Dwane Starlin of the Arts Club of Washington, Bryan Burrough, co-author of “Forget the Alamo,” will discuss key myths about the historical event, and possible hidden motives behind “the last stand,” such as the preservation of slavery, which was considered essential to the success of burgeoning cotton farms in Texas. He will also comment on President Monroe’s connection with this event, which will be of particular interest to club members.
Bio of Bryan Burrough
Bryan Burrough is a longtime correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine and the author or co-author of seven books, including the No. 1 New York Times Best-Seller “Barbarians at the Gate” and the top 10 best-selling “The Big Rich,” “Public Enemies”and “Forget the Alamo: The Rise and Fall of an American Myth,” written with Chris Tomlinson and Jason Stanford. After 30 years based in New York, he is now back at home in Texas.
Bio of Dwane Starlin
Dwane Starlin is a licensed DC tour guide, historical character interpreter, and professional musician (bugler, trumpeter & kazooist). He serves as Chairman of the History Committee of the Arts Club of Washington, D.C. as well as a docent-guide for the Dumbarton House, DC History Center, and Cultural Tourism DC.
His eclectic career spans stints as a rancher/farmer, petroleum landman, stock broker, and restaurant owner.
He is author of the book “Images of America.” He graduated from the University of Colorado with a BA in International Affairs and received a JD degree from the University of Denver.
