Artist bios:
Helena Colindres (they/them) is a nonbinary versatile vocalist, educator, and activist of Nawataketza ancestry. As a rising opera vocalist, they have performed roles such as the Governess in Britten’s Turn of the Screw, Despina in Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte, Therese in Poulenc’s Les Mamelles di Tiresias, and recently made their professional debut as Winnie in Beecher’s Sky on Swings with Opera Saratoga. They have also had the pleasure of winning various voice competitions such as the Camille Coloratura Awards and the Sylvia Green Voice Competition. Helena graduated from the Peabody Conservatory with their MM in Voice and Pedagogy in May 2022. They also have a BM in Voice and a BA in Comparative American Studies with a concentration in Identity and Diversity from the Oberlin College and Conservatory and an AA in Latin American and Latinx studies as well as an AS in social sciences from City College of San Francisco. They are also a member of the Pi Kappa Lamba Honors Association. Born and raised on Yelamu Ohlone land to refugee parents, Helena is passionate about fighting for marginalized people and feels blessed that they get to build community through their art, teaching, and organizing every day.
A horn player, organist, and composer, Derek Maseloff is the Festival Manager of the Prague Summer Nights Young Artists Music Festival. Derek also served as Director of Artistic Planning for the National Youth Orchestra of China, presenting dozens of concerts on three continents with highlights at the Berlin Konzerthaus and Carnegie Hall. Derek is a founding member of Classically Dope, a Washington D.C.-based musical experiment featuring rapper Konshens the MC and a cohort of classically trained musicians. Recent collaborations include a workshop with Yo-Yo Ma and a performance alongside the National Symphony Orchestra at the Anthem. As an administrator, Derek is a passionate advocate for young artists and a believer in the transformative experience of touring. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University in China and Asian-Studies (CAPS) and a Masters in Horn Performance from the University of Maryland. In his free time, Derek subjects himself to Philadelphia sports and enjoys spending time outdoors in his garden in Greenbelt, MD
Pianist Ria Yang enjoys solo performance and collaboration with a variety of musicians. She currently studies collaborative piano at University of Maryland and serves as collaborative pianist at instrumental and vocal divisions, and large ensembles. She was an Artist-in-Resident at the Collington Continuing Care Retirement Community in Bowie, Maryland, where she was interviewed by the NBC Today Show in 2019. Ria’s recent engagements include the virtual concert “Balcony Bar from Home” for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, “Riverdale Park Virtual Artist Showcase”, virtual concert for “Music for Autism” and “An die Musik”, Chamber Music Concerts at the Aspen Music Festival and School (Colorado), Zodiac Music Festival (La Bolline, France), Young Artist Concerts at the Icicle Creek Chamber Music Festival (WA), Concerto Competition Winners Concert at Northern Illinois University (IL).
