Dana Tai Soon Burgess presents an evening of modern dance specially curated for the Arts Club of Washington, reprising excerpts from works performed to the tunes from the greatest generation - artists including Frank Sinatra to Billie Holiday.
Burgess is the first-ever choreographer-in-residence for the Smithsonian Institution, currently based at the National Portrait Gallery. This evening of modern dance highlights Burgess' unique style through the presentation of five dances and will utilize nine of his company dancers.
Burgess will explain his role at the Portrait Gallery and share anecdotes from growing up in Santa Fe, NM to touring internationally as a U.S. State Department Cultural Ambassador to countries such as Pakistan, Egypt, and Mongolia, among others; tours that have informed Kennedy Center-commissioned works.
The Washington Post has described Burgess as "not only a Washington prize, but a national dance treasure", and “poet-laureate” of modern dance.
This will be a fun, must-see evening that illuminates dance in a unique way as a “universal language” (Burgess), and allows insight to an illustrious choreographic career still in process, using songs from the greatest generation.
