Duo Sorolla (Ismar Gomes, Cello & Wan-Chi Su, Piano)
After meeting in graduate school at the Peabody Conservatory, Mr. Gomes and Ms. Su began a collaborative relationship that evolved into Duo Sorolla, which celebrates its tenth season this year. Throughout their career together, they have performed dozens of recitals on important series throughout the USA, often collaborating with other renowned musicians. The Duo has performed a wide range of music including most of the standard repertoire for cello and piano,as well as lesser known music. Over the past several seasons, Duo Sorolla has commissioned and premiered works from William Weigel and Aaron Malone. Apart from these special projects, they have also championed the works of Lera Auerbach, George Walker, and Aaron Jay Kernis, and are keen to work with and promote the works of other living composers. Mr. Gomes and Ms. Su studied much of the duo repertoire under the tutelage of Colin Carr, Tom Sauer, Michael Kannen and other distinguished artists.
Aaron Malone, composer
Aaron is a violinist, violist and composer, and a local to the DC/MD/VA area. An active performer throughout the region, he can be seen with such groups as gypsy jazz ensemble Hot Club of Baltimore, Americana band Justin Trawick & the Common Good, and in a violin/piano duet with pianist Eli Staples. He has performed at legendary local venues including the Kennedy Center, the 9:30 Club, the Birchmere, Rams Head On Stage, the State Theater, Pier 6 Pavilion, and more. Aaron recently co-wrote the orchestral arrangements for Tyler Childers’ new album, Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven?, and performed the album release concert with Tyler at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Denver, CO.
While his performing activities include a broad range of styles and genres, his compositional focus is within the realm of classical and world music, with an emphasis on chamber music. He sites Prokofiev, Barber, Bartok and Billy Childs as some of his foremost compositional influences, and endeavors to follow in the traditions of focusing on melodic and contrapuntal content within his works.
