Reception to follow the program

A hundred years ago, 50,000 people gathered on the Mall for the dedication of the Lincoln Memorial—which featured the largest and most ambitious marble sculpture ever created in America: the monumental, seated Abraham Lincoln by Arts Club of Washington charter member, Daniel Chester French.

To begin the centennial observances in Washington, DC the Arts Club of Washington presents Lincoln scholar Harold Holzer—author of the award-winning 2019 biography: Monument Man: The Life and Art of Daniel Chester French—with an illustrated talk on the sculptor, his extraordinary career, and his greatest achievement. The talk explores French’s New England youth and training, his early successes, his brief and unsatisfying career in Washington, his later triumphs, and the behind-the-scenes process that resulted in the extraordinary Lincoln Memorial.

Harold Holzer, Director of the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College, and Chairman of the Lincoln Forum, has authored, coauthored and or edited 55 books on Lincoln and the Civil War era. He was appointed Chairman of the Lincoln Bicentennial Commission by President Clinton, earned the National Humanities Medals from President Bush in 2008, and won the Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize in 2015. The recipient of nine honorary degrees, Holzer served as historical advisor to Stephen Spielberg’s film, Lincoln, and recently appeared on both the CNN and History Channel Lincoln documentary series. On Sunday May 22nd, 2022, Harold Holzer will speak from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial for the official celebration of its hundredth birthday.

The event moderator, Dwane Starlin is chair of the Arts Club of Washington history committee, a licensed DC tour guide, historical character interpreter and professional musician leading walking tours through the Greater Baltimore-Washington region. He is co-author of “Images of America: Burleith,” the DC neighborhood where he has lived since 1999.
