Barbara Goldberg reads from her recently released book, Breaking & Entering: New and Selected Poems.
Known both as a poet and translator, Goldberg has authored six books, including The Royal Baker’s Daughter, winner of the Felix Pollak Poetry Prize. Books translated with Israeli poet Moshe Dor include Scorched by the Sun and After the First Rain: Israeli Poems on War and Peace. Naomi Shihab Nye describes Goldberg’s poems as “exquisitely shaped” while Stanley Kunitz has praised “the inventiveness of her mind and the brilliant assurance of her craft” as in this excerpt from Furlough, describing Israeli soldiers coming home on leave:
I love to see those tall, lean, muscular men
with their clean-shaven heads and digital
watches toss their kids in the air. And I love
to see them drop, not weightless, but light
as grenades. This is how children learn that fear
can be fun…
Following the reading there will be a discussion and opportunity for questions, followed by wine reception with light refreshments.
Dinner is available for members of the Arts Club starting at 5:30 pm.
