Join us for the premiere of a new jazz series at the Arts Club. Kindred Spirits is a cabaret style dinner show featuring a jazz duo performance.
For an intimate look at the collaboration between two musical minds, one need search no further than a jazz duo; the possibilities are endless as the performers spontaneously inspire and challenge one another, each relying on a combination of instinct and trust to create art as fleeting and pure as that moment in time.
For this inaugural event pianist Chris Ziemba and saxophonist Owen Broder will perform together.
Owen Broder:
Owen Broder is a saxophonist based in New York City. He runs in a variety of musical circles, leading his own groups and participating in others. The debut album from Broder’s American Roots Project, Heritage (ArtistShare®, 2018), earned him the title of Debut Artist of the Year from NPR’s Francis Davis and a 2018 Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer Award. DownBeat Magazine called it a “transcendental work of art.” His quintet, Cowboys & Frenchmen, has received critical acclaim for its recordings, including a four-star review from DownBeat Magazine for their 2017 release, Bluer Than You Think. Broder is also a member of the Anat Cohen Tentet and the Manhattan Saxophone Quartet, and has performed with internationally respected artists such as Ryan Truesdell’s Gil Evans Project, Trio Globo, and YouTube sensation Postmodern Jukebox. Chris Ziemba:
Chris Ziemba is a Washington, DC based jazz pianist, composer and educator. He holds degrees from the Eastman School of Music and The Juilliard School. Ziemba's entrance into the musical scene was made in 2009 when he was invited to be a guest on Piano Jazz, an NPR broadcast hosted by Marian McPartland. In 2011, he took first place in the Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition, and set off to build his career in NYC. Two years later, Ziemba had become in demand at clubs as a leader and sideman, and in 2016 he released his debut recording, Manhattan Lullaby. The album features his original compositions and arrangements with the collaboration of saxophonist Michael Thomas, veteran bassist Hans Glawischnig and drummer Jimmy Macbride. Other highlights of his time in New York include a recording with Jazz at Lincoln Center saxophonist Ted Nash and performances with Kurt Elling, Carl Allen, and Ryan Truesdell's Gil Evans Project.
