FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

This is a virtual event that requires an internet connection and Zoom*

In an effort to expand coverage of Dickens literature and lore, the Arts Club of Washington is pleased to present an online presentation by and interview with Lee Jackson, author of “Dickensland.”  Emily Bell, a noted Dickens scholar, will introduce the event and interview Jackson.  (Note:  The club previously organized an online interview with John Mullan, author of “The Artful Dickens.”)

Jackson’s presentation “will trace the fascinating history of Dickensian tourism,
exploring both real Victorian London and a fictional city shaped by fandom, tourism, and heritage entrepreneurs. Beginning in the late nineteenth century, we will investigate key sites of literary pilgrimage and their relationship with Dickens and his work, revealing hidden, reinvented, and even faked locations. From vanishing coaching inns to submerged riverside stairs and apocryphal shops - this is the curious history of an imaginary world.”
