Women and Dance in Muslim Societies

The Arts Club of Washington Dance Committee presents Tehreema Mitha, a Pakistani artist and scholar, in an enlightening exploration of the topic of women and dance in Muslim societies.  Through video footage, lecture, and Q/A Ms. Mitha will share her intense experience gained over a lifetime as one of the few internationally known Pakistani directors, choreographers, dancers, and composers.  This is a unique opportunity for an evening of art and discussion around a timely topic !

 Tehreema Mitha Dance Company

Ms. Mitha holds a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy, English, and French, and a MA in Fine Arts. After running the only dance company in Pakistan for five years, Ms. Mitha moved to the US in 1997 and at present is the only Pakistani born and trained artistic Director of a Dance Company and one of the few Muslim Female Artistic Directors of a dance company. Ms. Mitha has spent many years training dancers in her three very particular styles, the Classical, the Classical/Contemporary, and Contemporary. Her Classical Bharatanatyam dances, while staying within the technique and format, do not tell stories from Hindu Mythology but address universal themes instead. Her Contemporary dances break away from all structures of technique to address new subjects in dramatic scenarios; while the classical/contemporary use of the Bharatanatyam technique but break the mold with audacious daring.

A reception to meet and talk with artists will follow the performance.
