Alfred Schnittke: Master Time Traveler
Alfred Schnittke is a unique voice in twentieth century music. His music ranges from chaotic polystylism to deeply felt spirituality.
In the current Information Age, which began in the late 20th century, Schnittke's influences come from far and wide: the ghosts of Corelli, Haydn, Tchaikovsky, Chopin, Strauss and jazz (to name just a few) can be heard.
We bring you several of his most inspired chamber works, demonstrating the breadth of his influences:
Moz-Art for two violins (1976) - a psychedelic musical joke of twisted Mozartian themes.
Prelude In Memoriam Dmitri Shostakovich(1975) for two violins - his touchingly personal tribute to the older composer.
Piano Quartet Movement (1988) - based on a fragment by the 16 year old Mahler.
Mahler's Piano Quartet Movement (1876) - the work on which Schnittke's piano quartet is based.
Suite In The Old Style for Cello and Piano (1972) - a charming pastiche of neo-classical movements compiled from a variety of Schnittke's film scores.
The broad range of film subjects is another demonstration of Schnittke's colorful musical imagination: one describes the life of an amorous dentist, another is an animated children's film and third is a movie about a sportsman's double life.
