About The Evening
We invite you to Parlor Varieté: A Burlesque Salon, an evening that examines burlesque as an important American art form with a long, complicated, and interesting history – and provides ample demonstration of it!
Performer and burlesque historian Bebe Bardeaux, ranked #19 on the Burlesque Top 50 in 2024, will deliver a brief lecture on the history and culture of burlesque from its beginnings in the 19th century up to today. A full show will follow, featuring some of the most engaging burlesque and variety performers in the DC area. After the show, attendees can participate in a talk-back conversation with Bebe Bardeaux, along with the show’s producers, award-winning performer Delilah Dentata and Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey alum Jim Dandy.

What Is Burlesque?
It’s so much more than the 2010 Christina Aguilera and Cher movie!
While the word “burlesque” was originally used to describe theatrical productions that used exaggeration and parody to mock their subjects, burlesque as understood today has roots on the mid-nineteenth century American stage, when theatrical performance became a space for women to challenge prevailing ideas about femininity, beauty, and social convention.
Today’s burlesque involves striptease, though it is not explicit. It’s playful, often funny, and thoughtful. Scholars have described it as a transformative art that examines how bodies, especially those of women and femmes, are seen, staged, and interpreted. It celebrates those who exist outside of our culture’s narrow ideals of femininity.
We invite you to join us in celebrating burlesque – not only as a fantastic and fun way to spend an evening, but also as an important theatrical art form!
