Reportedly shot in just six days with a budget of $100,000 and running just 68 minutes, Detour received almost unanimous critical praise and was an unexpected box-office hit, still boasting one of the highest returns on investment of a Hollywood film.
In 1992, Detour was selected for the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." The film was was restored by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Film Archive in 2018 and re-premiered that year in Los Angeles at the Turner Classic Movies Festival.
