James Monroe, our nation’s fifth President and last Founding Father, was the most illustrious resident of 2017 I Street, the current home of the Arts Club of Washington. Biographer Tim McGrath will provide an illustrated Zoom presentation on the life of this storied figure, who enlisted as a teenaged soldier to secure our independence, stayed the guillotine from the head of Madame de Lafayette as President Washington’s minister to France during the Reign of Terror, led the homeland’s defenses in the War of 1812, and presided over the “Era of Good Feelings” as Chief Executive.
McGrath’s just-published biography of Monroe has been hailed by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Jon Meacham, as “A first-rate account of a remarkable life.”
