Zoom Event
Wednesday, October 13, 2021, at 12:00 pm
FREE & OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Enjoy an evening of poetry that is funny, warm and immediate when Lori Jakiela reads from her new book, How Do You Like It Now, Gentlemen?
Lori Jakiela is the author of the memoir Belief Is Its Own Kind of Truth, Maybe (2016), which received the 2016 Saroyan Prize. She also is the author of two other memoirs – Miss New York Has Everything and The Bridge to Take When Things Get Serious. Her work has been published in The New York Times, The Washington Post, and The Chicago Tribune.
Jakiela’s work is known for its wry take on the events of everyday life, as in her description of a carry-out in the poem Big Fish:
The pink-haired kid breads the fish, flops it
into flour, whips filets by their phantom tails.
The good people of Trafford don’t eat meat on Fridays.
They give up hopeful things – chocolate, beer, the lottery.
Keith’s place is cash only. The tip jar is an old coffee can
covered in grease thick enough to write a name in.
A question and answer session will follow the reading.
