Digital technology is having a major impact on our lives, and even more so during the pandemic. Henry Sienkiewicz, President of the Arts Club of Washington and Professor in Technology Management at Georgetown, will conduct a special interview of Dr. Sherry Turkle, “MIT professor, clinical psychologist, and pioneering researcher on the emotional and social effects of digital technology, from video games to social media.” She will discuss how her book “The Empathy Diaries- A Memoir” highlights the convergence and interrelationship of her life and research in unusual and remarkable ways. The book traces the evolution of her empathy journey while navigating challenging family experiences, including distance from a mysterious scientist father, her emergence as a pioneer in the male dominated world of MIT, and the shoals of the pandemic, which sparked new insights into the loneliness and excessive “screen time” triggered during the pandemic.
Sample Reviews of “The Empathy Diaries”
From Kirkus Reviews-
“A beautifully wrought memoir about how emerging technology makes us think and feel. In her latest book, renowned MIT professor Turkle achieves something unique: a near-perfect melding of personal and intellectual memoir. The author digs deep into her childhood to understand where her lifelong thirst for understanding the interface between technology and humanity was born.”
From Arthur Hoyle, The New York Review of Books
“This book should be required reading for men who care about the emotional landscape of women and the health of their own feminine side. Turkle’s narrative is skillfully assembled, like pieces in a puzzle. She effectively blends the story of her growth in self-awareness with her professional realization that computers pose threats to the humans who have created them. Empathy is the human quality that makes self-awareness possible, and it is also the quality that can humanize the technology that rules our present era.”
