The composers Rebecca Clarke, Clara Schumann and Dora Pejacevic all struggled with discrimination and inequality.
Rebecca Clarke suffered discrimination when reporters declared that her prize-winning viola sonata could not have been written by a woman.
Clara Schumann, despite being a prodigious composer and performer in her own right, struggled to support herself when Robert became ill, and found her main purpose to be commemorating her late husband's work and managing his legacy. She said 'A woman must not desire to compose'.
The Croatian composer, Dora Pejacevic, rebelled against the constraints of the aristocracy she was born into. Unlike many of her class, she did not shield herself from the suffering around her and became a nurse for wounded soldiers during the war. Her stunning piano quartet was inspired by the chamber works of Brahms and Schumann.
