“Cold, brilliant, and unforgettable.”
— Cyril Connolly
W. Somerset Maugham’s The Casuarina Tree (1926) is a collection of six short stories set in 1920s British Malaya. Through a series of interconnected narratives, Maugham examines the lives of British expatriates as their carefully maintained social façades begin to fracture under the pressures of colonial life, isolation, and cultural dislocation. The stories are marked by his sharp observational style and a focus on moral ambiguity, human desire, and the consequences of hidden choices.
Join us as we explore Maugham’s evocative world of expatriate life, storytelling, and moral complexity.
