OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
Join us for a luncheon at the Arts Club of Washington to celebrate the release of poet Geraldine Connolly's new book, Aileron. Gerry will read from her book, which features memories of her childhood in Western Pennsylvania as well as sharply-observed nature poems. Then a Pennsylvania-themed luncheon will be served. This event is the first of a new series of Club lunches focused on poetry that will combine the enjoyment of a reading by an outstanding poet with the opportunity to share a leisurely lunch and conversation around the table with the poet immediately following the reading. "Aileron" refers to the portion of a bird's wing that controls its flight. As the name suggests, the poems focus on the movement of memory, "this one small thing that lives along the road of my mind." The book has been lauded as "a trove of thrilling images and unexpected metaphors" (Natasha Saje) as well as "brilliant images backlit with emotion" (Lee Upton). Gerry has been the recipient of multiple fellowships in poetry and won the W.B. Yeats Society of New York Poetry Prize. She was the Margaret Bridgeman Fellow at the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference and her work has appeared in Poetry, Shenandoah, and many anthologies.
