Acclaimed composer and Steinway Artist Haskell Small will grace the Arts Club stage for the annual Monroe Dinner. Small has taught piano and composition at Washington Conservatory of Music since the school’s inception in 1984, and is a former chair of its piano department. He received his own training at San Francisco Conservatory and Carnegie Mellon, studied composition with Vincent Persichetti and piano with William Masselos and the great Leon Fleisher— who, in 1964, lost use of his right hand as a result of focal dystonia, a rare neurological condition that can cause involuntary contractions and “abnormal postures.” After a stroke in 2021, The Washington Post profiled Small, his recovering, and return to piano and composing. “I consider myself very lucky,” says Small. Article here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/music/2022/04/08/haskell-small-pianist-stroke/ Members will be lucky to witness his triumphant and inspiring return to beloved craft on April 1st.
