Join us for an evening with the author of the newly published biography of Laura Barney (1879-1974) ‘The Life of Laura Barney’. The author will examine various aspects of Laura Barney and her mother, Alice Pike Barney’s contributions to the arts in Washington, D.C.
Even though Laura lived in Paris during her adult life, there are numerous acts of service to the arts world of Washington. Laura legacies and contributions to this city will be discussed and her contributions to Smithsonian Institutions will be reviewed.
Laura’s mother, Alice Pike Barney was an artist, writer, theater director, philanthropist, prominent civic and social leader. With her wealth and social connections, she became a powerful ally for the arts when her family moved to the capital of the United States in 1889. Her name was synonymous with an unwavering commitment to the culture of creativity. Her connections with the Arts Club of Washington will be discussed.
Mona Khademi will share stories of building the National Sylvan Theatre, Studio House, the Nude Sculpture, Memorial Fund at the Smithsonian Institution and many more.
This presentation will be accompanied by showing of historical pictures. After question and answer period, there will be a book signing.
