Throughout the nineteenth century, American artists consciously and subconsciously excluded Native Americans from their portrayals of the national landscape, embracing a larger theme in artwork, literature, and political rhetoric which historians call the Myth of the Vanishing Indian. The White House Collection holds several historical works influenced by this myth. Sarah Fling, a historian at the White House Historical Association who studies material and visual culture in the Executive Mansion, will discuss these works which both reflected and influenced federal policy towards Native Americans in the nineteenth century and beyond.
