When Washington Was in Vogue, is placed in the 1920s around the Logan Circle/U St Corridor area (my current neighborhood) and is considered "Harlem Renaissance" literature.
When Washington Was in Vogue by E.C. Williams was first published anonymously in serial form by an African-American magazine called the Messenger. Later discovered by an academic researcher, Adam McKible, it was published in book form in 2004. It is a very rare account of the lives of the Black middle class in DC during an era of intellectual and cultural revival of the African American arts.
