Michael Whelan’s collection After God, a poetic memoir published in 2017, is the story of a lifelong lovers quarrel with God. He was featured in Pick of the Week by Best American Poetry and won first prize in the Leitrim Guardian 2012 Literary Awards. His work has appeared The Wallace Stevens Journal, The Innisfree Poetry Journal, The Coachella Review, The Elegant Atheist, The Healing Muse, Little Patuxent Review, and The Galway Review.
His poems range from quantum physics to Ireland to the spiritual life to aging and to creating an ongoing Christmas collection – all with an abundance of word play.
I LIKE TO VISIT EMPTY CHURCHES
I like to visit empty churches
I like especially empty Catholic churches
I like the intensity shaded in their shadows
I like
The quiet
The half light
The dogma stilled
The crackle of votive lights
The residue of incense in the air
