FREE FOR MEMBERS; $20 TO THE PUBLIC
Alice Pike Barney (1857-1931) was an artist, writer, theater director, philanthropist, prominent civic and social leader. With her wealth and social connections, she became a powerful ally for the arts when her family moved to Washington in 1889. She was called an ambassador of the arts. Her name was synonymous with an unwavering commitment to the culture of creativity.
Her daughter Laura Barney (1879-1974), who lived in Paris during her adult life studying the dramatic arts and sculpture, had numerous acts of service to the arts of Washington. Her legacies and contributions to the Smithsonian Institution will be discussed and reviewed.
Mona Khademi will share stories of their connections with the Arts Club of Washington, the National Sylvan Theatre, Studio House, the Nude Sculpture, Memorial Fund at the Smithsonian Institution, and many more. Ms. Khamedi has researched the life of Laura Barney since 2000 and has given talks and presented papers at conferences throughout Canada, Europe, and the United States, including at the Library of Congress and Stanford University. Her book, The Life of Laura Barney is available from Amazon and at Politics & Prose locations in Washington, D.C.
This presentation will be accompanied by a showing of historical pictures. After a question and answer period, there will be a book signing reception with refreshments and hors d'oeuvres.
