The Inaugural concert of the Classical Arts Society of Washington features two hallmarks of the chamber music repertoire; Johannes Brahms' two sonatas for cello and piano. The somber simplicity of the first sonata showcases the lyrical poignancy of the cello, while the work's formal structure and final movement's fugue pay homage to Bach, but with a Romantic twist. The second sonata explodes in an outward display of passion, orchestrated with full tremolos and vibrant displays of virtuosity. Its slow movement constitutes one of the gems of the repertoire, utterly transcending the boundaries of musical expression. A devilish scherzo and graceful finale end the evening with an effervescent charm befitting a master composer.
