Stephen Czarkowski is in demand as a conductor, cellist and educator in the Washington, D.C. area and nationally. He is in his eleventh season as Music Director and Conductor of the Apollo Orchestra, and has collaborated with artists from the Metropolitan Opera, Washington National Opera, New York Philharmonic and National Symphony Orchestra. He has led the Apollo Orchestra in performances at the Kennedy Center for the past four years. He is currently in his seventh year as Assistant Conductor of the York Symphony Orchestra. In the Fall of 2021 Mr. Czarkowski was appointed Orchestra Director at Georgetown Visitation School and Professor of Cello at Washington Adventist University. In addition he is also Director of Strings at the Norwood School, Conductor of The Symphonette at Landon School, and Music Director and Conductor of the Frederick Regional Youth Orchestra (tenth year). He led The National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. as a debut conductor, in conjunction with being selected for the 2003 National Conducting Institute directed by Music Director Leonard Slatkin. Other guest conducting appearances include the Honolulu Symphony, Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Prince George’s Philharmonic, Symphony of the Potomac, Washington Sinfonietta and the Friday Morning Music Club Orchestra. Highlights of the 21-22 Season are masterclasses at West Point Military Academy, Catholic University of America and Youth Orchestra of St. Cecilia.
Pianist Virginia (Ginnie) Lum made her debut with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra at age 8, and performs frequently throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. Frequent guest soloist with the St. Louis, Baltimore, Honolulu, Westchester, Arlington, Alexandria Symphonies, and The Apollo Orchestra, she made successful debuts at the Phillips Gallery in Washington, DC, Merkin Hall (NYC), and Carnegie Hall, as guest soloist with P.D.Q. Bach, performing the World Premiere of Peter Schickele's "Sonata Inamorata," in a special concert honoring the New York Philharmonic. St. Louis Globe declared: Lum is "a powerhouse on the piano." Caribbean press: "mistress of the ivory keys." Washington Post: ‘highly imaginative and beautifully played ....mastery” Juilliard awarded her Bachelor and Master degrees and the Rosenman Award for "outstanding pianist artistry." She often partners in concert with opera singers, Harolyn Blackwell, Lorna Myers, Faith Esham, and John Aler, and is a sought after chamber music player (Trio Illumino, Isis Ensembles,) as well as conductor, vocal coach, organist, and teacher. Also a graduate of Georgetown University's Law School, she received the Dept. of Justice’s highest litigation honor, the John Marshall Award for her trial work. Married to Robert Young, M.D., they are parents of 3 musical children, Colette, doctor of Biology and Music; pediatrician Marielle, and psychiatrist Justin.
